Piña Para La Niña Memories

Our summer family vacations were the absolute best!  Not only did we every year go to some amazing paradise-like beach destination on the beautiful Atlantic coast of Colombia, but we have plenty of adventure!  As kids adventure was as simple as hunting for crabs or swinging from a palm tree to jump into the ocean.  As we set out to pretend we were Spanish conquistadors exploring Cartagena or Santa Marta, there was always in the background the happy hip swaying rhythm of Vallenato along with a non-stop wave of fresh fruits and good coastal food to enjoy all day long. “Tengo Piña para la niña!” was the sure fire way to get all the kids come in for a snack, get hydrated and stay in the shade for some time 

The Pineapple Pine Cone DIY Inspiration

How To Make Pineapple Pine Cones 

This DIY is very easy to make.  Better yet, it offers some fun family time to make something together as I share summer memories with everyone.

Materials:

• pine cones
• yellow paint
• paint brushes
• green construction paper
• scissors
• tape or glue gun
• bakers thread 

Procedure:

1. wash your pine cones.  mine have been in storage and I don’t want any insect visits as we work with the pinecones
2. once your pine cones are dry start painting them yellow.  You can choose to just paint the edges or go as deep as you can.  It really is up to each artist
3. set pinecones to dry
4. next up is making the pineapple leaves. Get  your construction paper and scissors.  You might want to designate a special helper from the oldest in the group to help out with this step.  I particularly like that my chosen assistant for this task did not have the most straight lines.  this gives the final result a bit more realism You can use this image below as a template.  Notice that we did not cut out individual leaves.  Instead, we made a strip of them.  Also, you might want to curve the ends a bit.
5. It is time to put it all together.  Once pine cones are dry, get the leaves strip and roll it over the very top part of the pinecone.  Use the pinecone layers to help you set the leaves strip.  Once you are satisfied with the position of the leaves you can either tape it all together or dab a drop of glue gun to hold everything in place.  We suggest this be an adult exclusive job if you go with the glue gun. 
6. The final step is tying the bakers thread to the pineapple pine cones so you can hang them around.

A last minute kid executive decision was made to forgo the bakers thread.  Instead of hanging the pineapple pine cones around the children wanted to use succulents we had in our backyard to give the impression that the pineapple pine cones were in a more natural state: the fruit still on the plant.
